Sometimes Life Hands You A Screwdriver!

The other day, life handed Breezie and me another one of those little surprises nobody puts on the RV brochure. Our transfer switch decided it had had enough. And when I say it had enough, I mean the wires inside got hot enough to melt together. That will get your attention pretty darn quick. When we opened everything up and started looking around, we found what appeared to be the problem. Some of the connections weren't nearly as tight as they should have been. A few wires had been put together with wire nuts, and over time things had loosened up. Loose electrical connections and an RV aren't exactly two things you want becoming good friends. So Breezie and I did what we've learned to do after all these years together. We went to work. I would hold something. She would grab something. I'd say, "Where's that screwdriver?" She'd tell me it was probably sitting right in front of me. I'd look around for ten minutes and eventually discover that, sure enough, it was sitting right in front of me. We took our time, replaced the transfer switch, checked the connections, tightened everything down and made darn sure we were comfortable with what we had done before turning the power back on. Then came that little moment. Power on. Everything worked. Voltage looked good. Nothing got hot. Nothing smoked. Nothing made a noise it wasn't supposed to make. Ace Ventura was alive and happy again. And standing there with Breezie, looking at something that had been broken only a little while earlier, I got thinking about how much of life really works the same way. Things are going to break. Plans are going to change. Roads are going to wash out. Something you thought was fine yesterday might decide today is the perfect day to give you trouble. You can spend all afternoon being mad that it happened, or you can grab a screwdriver and see what you can do about it. That's one of the things Breezie and I have gotten pretty good at over the years. Not fixing RVs. We're still learning that one. We've gotten pretty good at figuring things out together. And maybe that's one of the secrets to a good life. You don't need everything to go right. You just need somebody beside you who's willing to crawl into the mess with you when it doesn't. Some days life gives you a beautiful sunset, a quiet morning and a cup of coffee. Other days it gives you melted wires. They're all part of the trip.
