Coming Off Peace Mountain After Dark
There are some roads you remember long after the dust settles. Coming off Peace Mountain in the dark last night is going to be one of them. We knew more monsoon weather was moving in, so we made the decision to get off the mountain while we still could. What followed was nearly 20 miles of rough mountain road, darkness, steep country, and about three and a half hours of slowly working our way down. We had the camera rolling for parts of it, and the video tells the story better than we ever could. It was wild. There were moments when all you could see was what the headlights gave you, and everything beyond that disappeared into the darkness. But mile by mile, we kept moving. Eventually we made it safely to the bottom and spent the night at a staging area used by the cowboys during roundup season. Not exactly a luxury resort, but after that ride down the mountain, it looked pretty darn good to us. This morning, September 16, we’re back on the road and headed toward Ely, Nevada. We’re planning to spend about two days in Ely, explore a little, meet some people if the opportunity comes along, and enjoy this part of the journey before pointing the motorhome toward our next stop. Before we leave Ely, we’ll post the next leg of our route here on the blog. That way, if we’re coming through your area and you’d like to cross paths with us, say hello, or have a copy of CONVICT you’d like signed, you’ll know where we’re headed. That is becoming one of the best parts of this whole trip. The scenery is beautiful. The roads are an adventure. But meeting people along the way and putting real faces to names we’ve seen on our page for years makes every mile worth traveling. For now, Ely is calling. And after the way this trip started, I have a feeling this road has a few more stories waiting for us.
