Where the Garden Meets the Sea: A Beautiful Day at Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens
Some days turn out so much better than anything you could have planned. You head out expecting a beautiful walk, and before the day is over, you've signed books, sung Happy Birthday to complete strangers, laughed until your cheeks hurt, and stood looking out over the Pacific Ocean. That was our kind of day! Our adventure began with two wonderful people, Jim and Lisa, whom Breezie and I have known for years through our travels and The Adventures of Finius the Skinniest. We had met them before in Quartzsite, Arizona. They'd been following our adventures on our website and realized we were traveling near their hometown. They reached out, hoping we could get together so I could sign their books. Well, you didn't have to ask us twice! Jim and Lisa have supported our writing adventures and have collected all our books. Getting to sit down together, visit, and personally sign their copies was pretty special. But they had another surprise waiting for us. They treated Breezie and me to a visit to the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, followed by lunch. And what an adventure it turned out to be! Forty-Seven Acres of Natural Beauty Located along the Northern California coast near Fort Bragg, the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is a remarkable place. Forty-seven acres of gardens, towering trees, winding trails, colorful flowers, and coastal bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The gardens were founded in 1961 by Ernest and Betty Schoefer, who saw the potential of this beautiful stretch of coastal property. What began as their vision eventually grew into a botanical treasure that people from all over the world can enjoy. And after walking through it ourselves, I can certainly understand why. As we wandered along the paths, there seemed to be something different around every corner. Gorgeous flowers, unusual plants, beautiful wooded areas, and little surprises that made us stop and look closer. One of the things I enjoyed was how the landscape kept changing. One minute we were admiring plants and gardens, and before long we were walking through a forest. We also explored the vegetable garden and discovered a little piece of history in the old Parrish family cemetery, a reminder that people were living and working on this land long before it became a botanical garden. There's something fascinating about walking through a place where nature and history have been growing together for generations. A Walk That Leads to the Pacific Ocean Now, here's where this botanical garden really sets itself apart. The trails eventually lead you through the trees and out toward the coastal bluffs, where the landscape opens up to the Pacific Ocean. What a sight! The rugged coastline, the ocean stretching into the distance, and the incredible contrast between the carefully tended gardens and the wild natural beauty of the coast made this one memorable hike. We made our way to the area around the Cliff House, enjoying the scenery and taking in the views. I love places like this. You can spend hours exploring, taking pictures, learning something new, and enjoying the simple pleasure of being outdoors. And having good friends along makes it even better. A Birthday Surprise Along the Trail Now, you know Breezie and I. Sometimes the unexpected little moments end up being the most fun. While walking through the gardens, we spotted two people wearing hats with what looked like birthday candles sticking up from them. Naturally, we were curious! We went over and started talking with them, asking about the birthday hats. It turned out they were both celebrating birthdays! Well, that called for a song. So Breezie, Jim, Lisa, and I sang Happy Birthday to them right there in the botanical gardens. What a happy little moment! Complete strangers sharing smiles, laughter, and a birthday celebration in the middle of a beautiful garden. It didn't cost anybody a penny to share that happiness, either. Good Friends, Good Food, and Plenty of Laughter After our garden adventure, Jim and Lisa treated us to lunch. And the laughter just kept coming. We visited, shared stories, and enjoyed each other's company so much that my cheeks were still hurting from laughing. I can't thank Jim and Lisa enough for their kindness, generosity, and friendship. When Breezie and I started sharing our adventures years ago, we had no idea how many wonderful people would become part of our lives along the way. And getting to meet people like Jim and Lisa, who have followed our adventures and supported our books, makes the whole experience even more special. The Best Part of an Adventure Looking back on this day, I think about all the beautiful flowers, the forest trails, the history, and that magnificent Pacific coastline. But I also think about four friends laughing together, two strangers celebrating birthdays, and the simple kindness of people taking time out of their lives to share something beautiful with someone else. Life has given me plenty of reasons to appreciate days like this. Sometimes happiness isn't something you have to go searching for. Sometimes it's waiting around the next corner, along a garden trail, or sitting across from you at the lunch table. And I hope, wherever you are today, that a little unexpected happiness finds its way into your life, too. Thank you, Jim and Lisa, for giving Breezie and me a day we'll remember for a very long time. And to everybody following our adventures, come along with us in the video below and experience the beautiful Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens for yourself. Until our next adventure, Finius and Breezie The Adventures of Finius the Skinniest
