Welcome to Ely Nevada

Walking Through Ely, Nevada Ely, Nevada is the kind of town where you can walk a few blocks and feel like you’ve stepped through several different chapters of history. Breezie and I left the motorhome behind, took the Jeep into town, and spent the day walking around downtown Ely with the camera. Everywhere we looked there was something else worth stopping for: old buildings, faded signs, colorful murals, vintage neon, and little pieces of Nevada history still standing right where they’ve been for generations. One of the biggest landmarks downtown is the historic Hotel Nevada. When it opened in 1929, the six-story hotel was the tallest building in Nevada. Today it is still one of those buildings that immediately catches your eye, especially with the huge miner holding a pickaxe towering over the old Nevada Club sign. But that was only part of what made Ely interesting. We wandered past old businesses and hotels, the Central Theater, murals covering entire walls, the Pony Express mural, sculptures, and even the unusual labyrinth at Sculpture Park. Some places have been restored, some show their age, and that is part of what we love about towns like this. The history hasn’t been polished away. Ely also has a strong mining and railroad story. Copper helped shape this town in the early 1900s, bringing people from many different cultures to this remote part of Nevada. Today, murals and historic buildings throughout downtown help tell the stories of the people who lived, worked, raised families, and built lives here. That is what we enjoy most about traveling this way. We’re not racing from one famous attraction to another. We like walking the streets, looking at the buildings, reading the signs, talking to people, and finding the stories that are still hiding in plain sight.
