Walking to the Biggest Tree on Earth: Our Journey to General Sherman
What would it feel like to stand beside a living giant that was already growing long before most of recorded American history? Breezie and I recently had the opportunity to experience something truly remarkable in Sequoia National Park, California. We walked through the magnificent Giant Forest to visit the General Sherman Tree, the largest living tree on Earth by volume. And we brought our camera along so you could experience the journey with us! A Walk Through a Forest of Giants There is something special about walking among giant sequoias. Everywhere you look, enormous trunks reach toward the sky, and even the smaller trees seem enormous compared to anything we're accustomed to seeing. The walk to General Sherman is approximately half a mile downhill from the main parking area. Along the way, there are interesting exhibits explaining the history of these incredible trees and helping visitors understand just how enormous they really are. One fascinating stop features a paved outline representing the massive footprint of General Sherman's trunk. Standing inside that outline gives you a whole new appreciation for what you're about to see. But nothing quite prepares you for the real thing. Meet General Sherman: The Biggest Tree on Earth When you finally reach General Sherman, the numbers are almost unbelievable. This giant sequoia stands approximately 275 feet tall, with a trunk measuring more than 36 feet across at its widest point near the base. Scientists estimate that General Sherman is roughly 2,200 years old, give or take several centuries. Think about that for a moment. This tree was already growing long before the United States existed. It survived generations of changing seasons, storms, fires, and everything else nature could throw its way. And today, people from all over the world travel to California just to stand in its presence. General Sherman isn't the tallest tree on Earth, but when it comes to the sheer volume of wood in its trunk, nothing else compares. Come Along and Experience It With Us One of the reasons Breezie and I love sharing our travels is that not everybody has the opportunity to visit places like this. Some folks can't travel anymore. Others may be planning their own adventures someday. And some simply enjoy exploring the beauty of our country from the comfort of home. That's why we filmed our walk to General Sherman. In our video, we're taking you along through the giant sequoia forest, sharing some interesting information and working our way toward one of nature's most extraordinary creations. And when we finally reach General Sherman, you'll understand why this magnificent tree draws visitors from around the world. The main trail is paved and about half a mile long each way. Remember that the walk to the tree is downhill, so you'll have an uphill climb returning to your vehicle. The park also provides a shorter, wheelchair-accessible approach from a separate parking area, with shuttle options available during certain seasons. And don't forget your camera! There's so much beauty throughout Giant Forest that you'll probably find yourself taking pictures long before reaching General Sherman. Some Things in Life Are Worth Slowing Down For Standing among trees that have been growing for thousands of years reminds me of something important. Life moves quickly. We get busy, worry about tomorrow, and sometimes overlook the incredible gifts surrounding us today. Yet here stands a tree that has quietly endured for centuries upon centuries, growing a little at a time. To me, that's a beautiful reminder of the Creator's handiwork and the importance of patience, perseverance, and appreciating the life we've been given. No matter how many birthdays we've celebrated or how many challenges we've faced, there are still beautiful things waiting for us to discover. Breezie and I are grateful we got to make this journey, and even more grateful that we can share it with you.
