24 Hairpin Turns and One Unforgettable Drive Through Sequoia National Park!
Have you ever driven a mountain road that made you wonder what in the world was waiting around the next corner? Well, Breezie and I found one in California, and what an adventure it turned out to be! We were headed into Sequoia National Park to see some of the largest trees on Earth. But first, we had to tackle the famous Generals Highway, a mountain road filled with sharp curves, steep drop-offs, and some absolutely breathtaking scenery. And believe me, getting up that mountain was half the adventure! A Road With Nearly 100 Years of History Here's something fascinating. The Generals Highway was completed in 1935, connecting Sequoia and General Grant National Parks, which later became part of Kings Canyon National Park. Imagine building a road through those rugged mountains nearly a century ago, without the equipment we have today! The highway climbs thousands of feet through the Sierra Nevada, with hairpin turns that demand your full attention. Some of those curves are so tight that larger vehicles have difficulty making them. We even caught a park ranger stopping an oversized camper during our adventure! A Little Advice for Fellow Travelers If you're planning a trip to Sequoia, here's something worth knowing. The National Park Service advises against vehicles longer than 22 feet on the winding section between Potwisha Campground and Giant Forest Museum. That's why we leave our 31-foot motorhome at the campground and explore in Willie Bear, our Jeep! Take your time, use the pullouts, and remember that the drive is part of the experience. There's no reason to hurry through scenery this beautiful. The Drive Down Was Just as Exciting! After spending time among those magnificent giant sequoias, we headed back down the mountain. And wouldn't you know it? Those curves seemed even more interesting going downhill! We filmed the journey in both directions so you could experience what it's really like. The narrow turns, the incredible mountain views, and a few unexpected surprises along the way. But here's what I loved most. We started the day thinking about the giant trees we were going to see. By the time we returned, we realized the road getting there had given us an adventure of its own. Sometimes the most beautiful memories aren't waiting at the destination. They're made along the way. And that's something Breezie and I are learning to appreciate more with every passing mile. Come Along for the Ride! We've put together a video showing our drive up and back down the Generals Highway. If you've ever wondered what this mountain road is really like, come experience it with us!
